About
The Other Maps of Egypt is a transdisciplinary online platform that aims to open a debate about the graphical representations of Egyptian cities. It looks deeply at maps as modes of representation and mapping as a practice of power. Focusing on the shift from analog authoritative maps of the city to digital crowdsourced ones, this platform is an attempt to put together a multiple perspectives across disciplines like architecture, history of urbanism, spatial politics, media theories and digital humanities. It includes a directory of maps both analog and digital as well as a set of critical essays and projects on maps, mapping, history, data visualization, and the right to knowledge and to the production of knowledge. This website works both as a data mining tool and a platform of sharing ideas and findings. Due to the expolrative nature of this research this website is always under construction.
Editor
Nermin El-Sherif is an architect and a MSc student in the Arab Academy for Science and Technology, Cairo, Egypt. In her thesis she tries to understand how the internet changed the maps of Cairo. In this website she puts parts of her ongoing research between academia and practice.
Nermin's interest in maps stems from her constant feeling of wilderness and being lost in cities. She believes she need a map.

خرائط مصر الأخري هي منصة إلكترونية متخطية التخصصات تهدف إلي فتح حوار عن التمثيل البصري للمدن المصرية. فتهتم بالخرائط كوسائط للتعبير عن المدن و بعملية رسم الخرائط كممارسة للقوي .تركز علي التحول من الخرائط الورقية و وسائط التمثيل الرسمية التي لطالما سيطرت عليها الدولة إلي الخرائط الإلكترونية و وسائط التمثيل البديلة التي أتاحها الإنترنت. تحتوي هذه المنصة علي دليل للخرائط الورقية و الإلكترونية للمدن المصرية، كما تتضمن أيضا مجموعة من المقالات النقدية و المشاريع المهتمة برسم الخرائط، التاريخ، التمثيل البصري للمعلومات و الحق في المعرفة و إنتاج المعرفة.

نرمين الشريف هي طالبة ماجيستسر في الأكاديمية العربية للعلوم و التكنولوجيا في القاهرة. في رسالتها تحاول فهم كيف غير الإنترنت خرتئط القاهرة. تنشر أجزاء من بحثها المنقسم بين الأكاديميا و العمل علي الأرض في هذه المنصة الإلكترونية. إهتمام نرمين بالخرائط يأتي من شعورها الدائم بالتوهان في المدن، تعتقد أنها في حاجة لخريطة.
Why it matters?
This study started by the taggling term Deleuze use to describe Foucault’s maps of power. He argued that Foucault in his writings about power structures controlling the disicplinary society he was charting maps that were never geographical but “Dynamographical”. He offered no clear definition for this concept yet if we start from Foucault’s assumption that power is cannot be possessed but practiced through a certain position within a network. And this position is under constant change. Then tracing these positions of power might result in the production of the so called “dynamo graphic map”.
It is worth mentioning that the term itself refers to an instrument for recording the amount of force exerted or (in medicine)the degree of muscular power according to the English Encyclopedia.
